Here are some excellent reference books that I find/found valuable in my study of Yoga.

Keep It Simple Series: Guide to Yoga by: Shakta Kaur Khalsa - This is the first book I recommend to anyone who asks me for something to read for an overview of the practice of Yoga. Although it seems remedial, it truly has a wealth of easy to read and understandable information in it. This book also has many many references to other text and web-sites that you can check out if there is something you are particularly interested in. I HIGHLY recommend beginning your study with this book! You can find it at most major book sellers. (much of the information on this site is derived from this text)

Smart Guide to Yoga by: Stephanie Levin-Gervasi - This is another general overview of Yoga. Although not quite as detailed as the aforementioned, it is a good basic look at the practice and has a lot of good information within it.

Hatha Yoga Illustrated by: Martin Kirk and Brooke Boon - This is a great book if you are looking for the illustrated asana (postures) of Yoga. It encompasses most of the asana and an easy to understand description of each. It also includes the Sanskrit as well as the western names for the postures which is helpful regardless of the form of Yoga you are practicing.

Healing Yoga by: Swami Ambrikananda Sawaswati - This is a great text if you are looking for instruction with a specific ailment. It does also encompass the chakras and healing energy that Yoga promotes as well as meditative and dietary concerns.

Real Men do Yoga by: John Capouya - This a practical guide to the practice of Yoga in the western world. It is written simply without all of the "granola" stuff that many associate with the study. It separates Yoga into specific sports training and is a great easy read for those interested simply in the physical practice.

If you are looking for related text and information that is associated with the practice of Yoga, I recommend the following.

The Chakras:

Wheels of Light by: Rosalyn L. Bruyere - I have found this book invaluable! It delves into the study of the Chakras and the human energy system. It looks into the history as well as the technical study on the subject and is VERY informative.

Children's Yoga:

Babar's Yoga for Elephants by: Laurent De Brunhoff - This a terrific children's book that discusses a very basic history and study of Yoga. Kids can relate to it easily and who doesn't love Babar?

Children's Book of Yoga by: Thia Luby - This book is illustrated beautify and is very descriptive. For the parent who practices, who's children are interested, this is a great book to peak their curiosity.

Yoga Games for Children by: Danielle Bershma and Marjoke Visschner - This book is all about fun. While not as meditative, it brings Yoga to a child's level and makes it interesting. It is definitely a book that can absorb a rainy day.

Healing Images for Children by: Nancy Klein, M.A. - For the child who seems to connect with the meditative part of Yoga this book is fabulous. While the meditations need to be instructed by an adult, they are wonderfully fulfilling and healing for the child.

Ready... Set... R.E.L.A.X. by: Jeffery S. Allen, M.Ed. and Roger J. Klein, Psy. D. -This is a research based program of relaxation, learning and self esteem for Children. A wonderful book, not necessarily based in Yoga, but wonderful for kids. There are lost of activities and information for parents and teachers. Highly recommended!

Spirituality:

The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga by: Deepak Chopra, M.D. and David Simon, M.D. - For those of you who are looking to delve more into the spiritual nature of Yoga, this is the perfect book. It takes the traditional practice to a deeper level in an understandable way. While there are many many books on Yoga as a spiritual venture, this one is the most valuable that I have found.

Energy Work:

Hands of Light by: Barbara Ann Brennan - To me this is the scripture on energy healing. Barbara Brennan is one of the leaders in the field and while a bit technical, this book is so informative it may take a while to absorb. Regardless, it is an indispensable part of anyone who is curious about the human energy field's library!

Light Emerging by: Barbara Ann Brennan - This is the second of her popular works on energy healing. It is a bit more intense and technical, but if you liked Hands of Light, a must read.

Energy Healing by: Jim Gilkeson - This book instructs on how to use your energy field for spiritual, emotional and physical well-being. Definitely a valuable book, not necessarily recommended for your first read on energy. It's a "how to" for personal energy work, but I suggest you familiarize yourself with Hands of Light first.
